How this guide is prepared

Terra Routes makes editorial selections and planning suggestions. Visit order, duration and effort are estimates, not a personal inspection of every place. Check current opening hours, prices, services and access conditions with the venue or operator before your visit.

Make room for this

Check current opening times, tickets and access with the venue before visiting.

Less overwhelming than Florence or Siena

Plan the last stretch into the city

Choose your places

This is a shortlist, not a requirement to visit every stop.

Medici Fortress

Medici Fortress

A fortress above the centre; allow for the uphill approach.

Allow for uneven paving, slopes and exposed sections. Bring water and choose a cooler part of the day in hot weather. Check gates and return transport; an outdoor site is not necessarily open at all hours.

Basilica of San Domenico

Basilica of San Domenico

Cimabue’s painted crucifix inside a Dominican church.

Check visitor access separately from service times. Keep the visit quiet and dress appropriately for a working place of worship. Frescoes and chapels may have different admission arrangements from the main church.
