How this guide is prepared

Terra Routes makes editorial selections and planning suggestions. Visit order, duration and effort are estimates, not a personal inspection of every place. Check current opening hours, prices, services and access conditions with the venue or operator before your visit.

Your journey, step by step

Stay in Florence and spend the day in Siena. Choose your outward and return journeys first, then make room for a walk, one main visit and a café pause.

  1. 01

    Before leaving Florence

Choose both journeys and check the return stop. Leave time to reach it; avoid making the last service your only option.

    Choose your transport
  2. 02

Arrive and find your starting point

Use the arrival guide, then open Siena in one day. Adjust its starting point to your actual bus stop, station or car park.

  3. 03

    Explore with a pause

Follow the city walk and choose a café. Add a cathedral visit only if its opening times and tickets fit your return journey.

    Return to Florence

Finish with enough time to reach your departure point. Recheck the service notices and the boarding location.

Choose your transport

Check departures, stops, fares and service notices for your travel date. Journey time depends on the service and traffic; leave room for the final approach into Siena.

Bus

Check Autolinee Toscane line 131R and the stops for your service. Some departures use Via Orti Oricellari outside Florence’s bus station; verify the boarding point before leaving.

Train

Search Firenze Santa Maria Novella → Siena and check any changes. Siena station is about 2 km from the centre, so allow a separate stage for reaching the old town.

The journey between cities

This map helps you compare the journey. Confirm the actual service and boarding stop with the operator. Walking maps are on the Siena route pages.

From arrival to the old town

From the station, escalators through Porta Siena lead to Antiporto di Camollia; the walk into the centre continues from there. Escalators do not guarantee a step-free route. Check access if stairs are a concern.

Adjust your plan

Leaving late

Keep the Campo, one main visit and a pause. Check your return time before adding another stop.

Rain

Choose one indoor visit and a café nearby. Check the guide for opening hours and tickets.

Luggage

Arrange storage with your accommodation before travelling. Do not build a long walk around unconfirmed luggage storage.

Less energy

Skip optional climbs and viewpoints. Work out a comfortable way back to your transport or accommodation first.

Continue in Siena

Open an existing walk or collection for the city part of your trip.
