Gulf of Poets

Choose Porto Venere, Palmaria, Lerici or Tellaro for a coastal day, or Sarzana for an inland historic centre with churches and the Firmafede fortress. Sarzanello sits above Sarzana and needs its own approach and opening check. These are alternatives to combine selectively with real travel time.

Lerici

Choose a shore, then give it the day

La Spezia can serve coastal road and boat connections, while the Lerici side has its own base logic. Sarzana is a separate town with a railway station and walkable historic centre. Do not treat it as a waterfront neighbourhood of Lerici or a short on-foot addition to Porto Venere.

Porto Venere

Porto Venere

A colourful waterfront and narrow old-town lanes leading towards the headland. Allow a full half-day with a meal, rather than a fast detour from the railway.

Sarzana: an inland historic centre

Sarzana gives the Gulf of Poets area an inland town day, with public streets, churches, cafés and the Firmafede fortress. It is a separate rail destination from the waterfront villages.

Harbour time, one seated meal and a chosen stretch of promenade. Tellaro is an alternative outing rather than another required stop.

Transport

Keep the existing bus and seasonal boat planning for the coastal villages. For Sarzana, check trains serving Sarzana station, then walk into the centre. Any onward bus to the coast needs its own timetable. Sarzanello is an uphill visit, not a station-adjacent fortress or an assumed local-bus stop.

Coastal crossings, island paths and town visits need different access checks. Firmafede and Sarzanello have separate schedules; at this check the MUdeF multimedia museum at Firmafede is temporarily closed. Churches suspend visits during services. Suggested route times begin after arrival and can move to fit confirmed openings.

Food & local flavours

Keep meals in the town or shore where the day takes place. Sarzana adds Osteria dei Sani for a planned lunch and Pasticceria Gemmi for a shorter coffee-and-pastry pause. Confirm service, ingredients, menu and budget directly. The two stops have different purposes and time allowances.
